Singapore just like historical Venice

I have read to the end of 'City of Fortune: How Venice Ruled the Seas' by Roger Crowley. Singapore is so much like the historical Venice. We might even be making the same mistakes which had led to the decline of our historical cousin.

What is missing from the extract here is the story of how Venice put the wrong people in charge especially the navy. One stupid fatal mistake is all it took for the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet to shove Venice down the tube. Commercially Venice decline came rapidly when the Portuguese found a way to by pass Muslim lands to reach the source of spices in the Orient. Prices collapsed and profits evaporated.
