PM Lee sues blogger Roy Ngerng

Yeah, I just got to know about this from TOC. Although I am dismayed the PM is suing him, yet given our norms, we shouldn't be surprised. On and off I had read his posts if Singapore Daily feature him. On topics I have some knowledge in, I often find him misrepresenting and twisting facts and data. Now if you read him at face value on topics you are not familiar with, you could be misled by him. In other words, he is a dangerous and irresponsible character but he isn't the only one. The question is do we use the law against him or give the online community the opportunity to discover and uncover him for what he is? And I thought we are well on the way to unmasking him. There is no need to sue.

E.g., I got this from TOC.

  • Jason Lim Honestly, I feel that Roy had it coming. Lots of his data is misrepresented and clearly false. And when you highlight them to him. He says that you are 'just a mole' and he wont debate with you. Its sad really, he is just like those PAPigs. He force you to believe him but dont want to debate with you. I am also from the opposition camp and I hate to see people like him discrediting the hard works of opposition members. We should be clear and transparent, open to debate, and never have the intention to misuse and misrepresent data to mislead the people.

  1. I first came across Roy, ironically from your blog. I remembered it was months (years?) ago, when he wrote an article about "why can't we just get along" and you linked to his post, agreeing with the sentiments he expressed. I think many others did the same too and that was Roy's shot to Internet fame. At that time, he was coming across, trying to sound sensible, neutral. But after that shot to fame, gradually, his articles take on a very negative tone. He did exhaustive analysis and came up with 5-part, 10-part lengthy pieces. Anyway, I stopped following him after that shot-to-fame article because I found his postings too "cheong hei". I admire him for his dedication but sometimes wonder, given how young he is, does this guy even work for a living??? I sometimes feel that he has promise, but he really needs to lie low, go through the school of hard knocks first, accumulate "wisdom" and perhaps he'll be able to blog with more maturity.

Nonetheless, in every battlefield (in this case, PAP vs everyone else), there's all kinds of "fighters". You can say that in the "everyone else" field, Roy is a provocateur. Someone who stirs the pot, goes to length, stretches the truth. Don't forget, we also have such provocateurs on the PAP side too. Obvious case I can think of is Vikram Nair.

Suing a provocateur to silence him is never a good idea. Roy is a nobody. PM is the 800lb gorilla. There's no doubt Roy will end up a "loser". But it also makes PM a "loser" too. When you wrestle with pigs, you only muddy yourself.

  3. Why wont the PM take the high road and just rebut him point by point publicly?
Is it necessary to take every bloggers to court for differences or "misinformation"?
If the information is falsely represented, then present the accurate facts.
So can the people now expect PM Lee and his team of top lawyers to sue and go after Dr Christopher Baldings too?
They have been very silent in everything he has written so far, does that mean Dr Baldings is right?
Imagine Obama trying to "fix" every damn bloggers out there who disagrees or disrepute him!

Yes, let's see the PM go after credible foreign academics who are also defaming and speaking untruths.? He has no balls, only targeting singaporeans. Like father like son. LKY went after oppositions leaders. His son goes after citizen bloggers. Both are cowards.

    2. They wouldn't dare to take on foreign academics in foreign courts, would they? Cases like Roy's would have been dismissed without question. Just look at the filthy comments they throw at Obama and his adminstration on the Internet. Yet not a single defamation suit by the POTUS.
Fox News is especially notorious in sliming Obama, especially on Benghazi, yet their people and correspondents are welcomed to the White House correspondents' dinner every year.
Politicians should have a higher thresholds to wild allegations and accusations, otherwise they should stay out of politics all together.

  5. This is exactly my sentiment. I think we do not need the so called "lunatic" fringe, or self styled freedom fighters like Roy, in order to bring about change. People say the current opposition parties do nothing and do not speak up on such things. How do you know they are not busy working the ground? Why do they need to associate themselves with the likes of Roy? We do not need his 400 articles to know there is a minimum sum that is increasing every year that makes it harder and harder to withdraw our money. We do not need his Hong Lim Park Protests which attract only a few hundred people each time, not much different from PAP rallies anyway. What we need in policy change can only be achieved through law making, through Parliament, which means a credible opposition, with mature and level headed individuals who know how to bring about success and proper debate. And of course, a ruling party that listens and makes gradual change.

Just google about. You will find that no major opposition player worth his or her salt will bother to speak up for Roy. And his application to become an NMP, well... compared to our current NMPs, I would be surprised if he is deemed to be at their level
